The Victorian Bushfires Civil Funeral Celebrant Funerals. Here is an opinion letter I would like to send to every funeral celebrant in Australia. Dear Colleague As someone who has done many gratis Funerals for needy people I would like to insert a word of warning. -- The government is giving a grant of $5000, I hear, for each person killed in the bushfires - for the funeral. I can almost smell what is going to happen. Most of the Fundeeral Directors will take all of it, and take the credit for the work of the Funeral Celebrant. Some, as they have done so so often before, will let the CFC do the Funeral and then charge, directly or indirectly, for your hard work. -- You are an independent business person no less than the Funeral Director. -- After I had been exploited many times, I one day announced to a Funeral Director who put the hard word on me. -- "Yes, "Fred", I will discount my fee the same percentage as you discount yours. Because Fred I am in the same business position as you." -- What many of them do not want to hear is that you are not a clergyperson. You do not have a congregation, you are not paid a stipend, you do not get a free car and petrol, or house, or mobile phone, or computer provided by a congregation. -- If you want to be generous , I urge you to be so. Take your fee from the FD and then personally give it in cash as your donation to that family or to a relief Fund (You can even explain this to a family confidentially before you start). But please do not let us be further exploited , and prolong the notion that we can be exploited, that you are there to be exploited, --- any longer. -- Invocare, the big Funeral Corporation,owns Le Pines, Simplicity, White Lady Funerals and many others.
